About Z
Psychotherapist • Coach • Educator • Speaker • Integrative Wellness Professional
Z. Hamilton Avery, LCSW, BC-TMH, CMT, CYT-1,000, TIYT (he/they) is a licensed clinical social worker, therapist, and coach whose interdisciplinary background spans mental health, healthcare, crisis intervention, integrative health, and mind-body practices. Along with extensive training in complementary and integrative approaches to health and well-being, Z holds an associate’s degree in pre-nursing studies, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s degree in social work.
Z’s work is grounded in a humanistic, person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed understanding of care. Their practice emphasizes compassion, harm reduction, inclusivity, social justice, and evidence-based interventions. Z works with adolescents (13+), adults, and older adults who may be navigating stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness and pain, grief, suicidal ideation, life transitions, or other challenges that are part of being human.
Therapy with Z is a collaborative process focused on developing practical skills that clients can continue using long after sessions end. The therapeutic process encourages greater awareness of thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and physical responses while fostering healthier coping strategies, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and self-compassion. Clients are also encouraged to build on their existing strengths, clarify their personal values, and develop greater flexibility in responding to life’s challenges.
Z takes a holistic approach to therapy that recognizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Since there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, Z adapts therapy to the needs, preferences, goals, identities, strengths, and experiences of each person. Their clinical work draws from cognitive, behavioral, mindfulness-based, somatic, expressive, and other evidence-based and integrative approaches.
Z also provides non-clinical coaching focused on personal growth, practical skills, goals, habits, values, life transitions, resilience, and well-being. Coaching draws from Z’s broader interdisciplinary background while remaining distinct from psychotherapy and mental health treatment. Online psychotherapy is available in Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, and Idaho, while coaching is available nationwide throughout the United States.
Z’s perspective has also been shaped by extensive interdisciplinary education in complementary and integrative health. Their training has included massage and bodywork, yoga, meditation, mindfulness, relaxation practices, reiki, acupuncture, and other mind-body approaches. Z has completed more than 1,000 hours of yoga teacher training, primarily in India, and has studied multiple approaches to yoga and contemplative practice. This broader background informs an understanding of health that extends beyond symptoms and recognizes the many ways people experience distress, healing, resilience, and well-being.
Between therapy, healthcare, crisis work, bodywork, yoga, coaching, and education, Z has provided care and support to thousands of people since 2010. Their professional experience includes work with rural and low-income communities, adolescents and older adults, 2SLGBTQIA+ people, individuals living with serious mental illness and chronic medical conditions, survivors of trauma, people experiencing homelessness, caregivers and families, and individuals navigating mental and behavioral health crises.
Z’s experience spans primary care, hospice and palliative care, outpatient and community mental health, schools, crisis services, emergency response, and private practice. They have provided care through telehealth as well as office, school, community, home, and healthcare-based settings. These experiences continue to shape a therapeutic perspective that considers not only symptoms but also health, relationships, environment, identity, access to resources, life circumstances, and the systems surrounding each person.
Beyond clinical practice, Z is passionate about expanding access to coaching, mental health education, and practical resources for well-being through writing, teaching, and resource development. They create research-informed therapeutic resources, mindfulness and meditation practices, educational materials, workshops, and professional trainings for individuals, caregivers, clinicians, groups, and community organizations.
Drawing from research, interdisciplinary training, and clinical experience, Z works to translate psychological concepts into practical and accessible resources that people can use in everyday life. This work reflects a broader commitment to making mental health education and integrative approaches to well-being more inclusive, understandable, and actionable.
Outside of their professional work, Z enjoys writing, painting, traveling, reading, practicing yoga, watching movies, exploring new coffee shops, spending time outdoors, and connecting with friends. A lifelong learner, they are continually inspired by psychology, philosophy, science, spirituality, integrative health, and the arts. Z’s curiosity is fueled by creativity, meaningful conversations, and experiences that deepen his appreciation for the richness and breadth of the human experience. Whether in their personal life or professional work, Z believes that growth begins with curiosity, connection, and remaining open to new perspectives.
